Dog Training Lesson 10 : Turn Left?Turn Right?

Very often, when we bring our beloved dog out for an evening walk, we would come to a place where we need to make a turn...It doesn't matter whether it's a right turn or a left turn.

But, the point is, what usually happen is that the owner would have to JERK or PULL his/her dog to accomplish a simple task. Let's face it that dogs are animals who LOVE TO WALK IN A STRAIGHT LINE. So, if you were to ask you dog to make a turn, he needs some training.

So, to all of you dog lovers, I personally understand what it feels like having to pull your dog everytime you come to a corner...HEART-BROKEN...So here goes the simple dog training of TURNING.

  1. Take your dog to a walk preferably during night time where there would be less distration.
  2. When you come to a corner, slow down and at the same time call out the name of your dog. (This would make him aware and be ready to perform a task).
  3. Take small steps and turn either to your left or right. (ATTENTION : For the first time it's always better to turn to the side of your dog. Meaning if he is standing on the RIGHT hand side, then turn to the right).
  4. If your dog keep walking straight on, gently pull him to stop him. But again remember NO JERKING!!!This would hurt your dog.
  5. Finally, if your dog successfully complete the dog training lesson of turning, PRIASE HIM.
Word of remind : Repeat the dog training lesson several times because it would
help your dog familiarize with what he should do whenever you
slow down during a walk.
