Very often, when we bring our beloved dog out for an evening walk, we would come to a place where we need to make a turn...It doesn't matter whether it's a right turn or a left turn.
But, the point is, what usually happen is that the owner would have to JERK or PULL his/her dog to accomplish a simple task. Let's face it that dogs are animals who LOVE TO WALK IN A STRAIGHT LINE. So, if you were to ask you dog to make a turn, he needs some training.
So, to all of you dog lovers, I personally understand what it feels like having to pull your dog everytime you come to a corner...HEART-BROKEN...So here goes the simple dog training of TURNING.
- Take your dog to a walk preferably during night time where there would be less distration.
- When you come to a corner, slow down and at the same time call out the name of your dog. (This would make him aware and be ready to perform a task).
- Take small steps and turn either to your left or right. (ATTENTION : For the first time it's always better to turn to the side of your dog. Meaning if he is standing on the RIGHT hand side, then turn to the right).
- If your dog keep walking straight on, gently pull him to stop him. But again remember NO JERKING!!!This would hurt your dog.
- Finally, if your dog successfully complete the dog training lesson of turning, PRIASE HIM.
Word of remind : Repeat the dog training lesson several times because it would
help your dog familiarize with what he should do whenever you
slow down during a walk.
help your dog familiarize with what he should do whenever you
slow down during a walk.
